The Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO) was established as a grassroots-driven movement with the primary aim of supporting Peter Obi’s presidential campaign in Nigeria. The organization quickly gained momentum by organizing and participating in significant national events, including the first-ever million-man marches across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to show solidarity for Peter Obi. The CPO became instrumental in galvanizing support through a wide range of initiatives such as organizing summits, creating a functional website for public information, and mobilizing members for the campaign’s success.
The Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO) was founded as a passionate and determined group dedicated to advancing the political vision of Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, in his bid for the presidency. From its inception, the CPO recognized the importance of building a broad-based, grassroots movement that could foster change and challenge the status quo in Nigeria’s political landscape. With a clear focus on Peter Obi’s values of integrity, transparency, and social justice, CPO became a central force in driving support for the Obi-Datti ticket in the 2023 presidential elections.
The coalition’s work began with the highly successful organization of mass mobilization campaigns, including the first-ever million-man marches across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). These marches brought together citizens from diverse backgrounds who were united in their support for a better, more accountable government. Following the success of these marches, CPO continued to build on the momentum by organizing the first-ever support group summit in Abuja, where key stakeholders, supporters, and members gathered to strategize and strengthen the movement’s reach.
Understanding the power of information, CPO built a fully functional website that served as an essential hub for campaign updates, livestreaming important events, and providing crucial information to the public. The website also acted as a bridge between the leadership of the movement and its vast network of supporters. As the movement grew, several members of CPO also became integral parts of the campaign’s leadership, serving in the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) and the party itself.
In addition to organizing rallies and summits, CPO actively contributed to the campaign’s outreach by drafting and mobilizing groups to attend LP rallies, supporting polling unit agents, and delivering key campaign materials across the country, including sample ballots, stickers, t-shirts, and fez caps. This grassroots-focused approach was further reinforced by strategic partnerships with organizations such as the IBBN and NTN, which helped coordinate a nationwide mobilization plan to ensure that Obi’s message reached every part of Nigeria.
CPO’s commitment to ensuring fair and credible elections was evident in its partnership with UNMI and NDPO-USA, which funded a forensic investigation into the 2023 voters’ register. This investigation, aimed at identifying underage and ineligible voters, led to a number of purged names from the register, making a tangible impact on the integrity of the election process. In its ongoing efforts to safeguard democracy, CPO also sponsored legal action against INEC and its representatives, challenging the conduct of the 2023 elections and advocating for accountability.
The coalition’s strategic vision went beyond the election period, with CPO maintaining an active role in post-election strategies and advocacy. It continuously engaged with stakeholders through regular communiques and letters, ensuring that its members’ voices were heard in the ongoing quest for justice and electoral integrity. CPO’s commitment to protecting democracy also led to the formation of the Coalition of Concerned Nigerians, which aimed to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary and ensure the protection of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
In all of its efforts, the Coalition for Peter Obi has shown unwavering dedication to the cause of democratic reform, social justice, and national unity. Through its initiatives, CPO has built a resilient network of supporters and played a pivotal role in advocating for a government that prioritizes the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. As the movement continues to grow, CPO remains a key player in the fight for a just and accountable leadership for Nigeria.
In addition to organizing grassroots rallies and events, CPO played a vital role in providing key campaign support, including deploying polling unit agents, providing data, and sponsoring radio and TV jingles to amplify the Obi/Datti ticket. Its members also appeared on various media platforms to advocate for the campaign and participate in strategic partnerships with organizations like UNMI, NDPO-USA, IBBN, and NTN, to strengthen national grassroots mobilization.
CPO’s advocacy efforts were further evident in its role in the forensic analysis of the 2023 voters’ register, which contributed to the removal of ineligible voters. The coalition also worked closely with the election situation room projects and delivered campaign materials across the country. Additionally, CPO’s involvement in legal actions against INEC and its commitment to post-election strategies highlight the organization’s continued dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
Over time, the CPO has been a pillar of support for Peter Obi’s vision, promoting democratic values, transparency, and accountability, all while maintaining a strong focus on empowering citizens and ensuring their voices are heard in the political process.
